Difference Between Shipping And Logistics

Shipping and Logistics are often used interchangeably despite having major differences between them. Understanding the difference between shipping and logistics is important for good business.

Beginning with shipping, simply put it is the transfer or movement of goods from one place to another. There are many different types of shipping including: hazmat shipping for the movement of dangerous goods as well as same day shipping for the expedited movement of goods. Although both of these shipping types require different documentation, handling, arrival times and means of transportation, they both involve the movement of goods from the point of origin to the point of destination

Logistics on the other hand, consists of several other smaller areas of specializations, one of which is shipping. These include material handling, warehousing, packaging and more. Logistics involves both the integration and management of these smaller areas in order to minimize costs and improve overall operations for businesses. Other areas of logistics include material handling, warehousing, packaging and much more. Logistics involves both the integration and management of these smaller areas in order to minimize costs and improve overall operations for businesses.

Though Logistics has a wider scope and scale, both have their own share of importance in the supply chain management process. And both require effort on the business’ part for smooth functioning.

An inventory management system could come to the rescue for maintaining logistics and shipping. An inventory management system affords you real-time visibility into your inventory, how much or how little you need, all the orders and shipments, and overseeing of the movement of goods from the moment it enters the warehouse, its journey through the supply chain, till the time it is shipped.
